Source transparency: All information on GTA 6 Vault is sourced from Rockstar's official trailers, press releases, and Take-Two investor communications. Sections that go beyond confirmed facts are clearly labelled as our own analysis.

Vice City Returns — Officially

When Rockstar first confirmed GTA 6's setting in its original press release — "Set in the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond" — it was the first official acknowledgement in over 20 years that Vice City was back. Trailers 1 and 2 showed glimpses. The August 18 CYBERLEEK map gave an unofficial overhead view of the entire state.

On August 27, Rockstar showed Vice City the way they intended it to be seen for the first time — in motion, in official footage, at full fidelity.

This article breaks down every district, landmark, and confirmed location detail from the Extended Look and the accompanying press session at Rockstar North.

What We Already Knew Before August 27

From Rockstar's two official trailers and press materials:

  • Vice City is Miami-inspired, returning from GTA: Vice City (2002) in a modern setting
  • The city features neon-lit nightlife districts, beaches, and coastal properties
  • Leonida Penitentiary is located in or near the state — Lucia walks out of it in Trailer 1
  • The Florida Keys-style island chain (referred to as the Leonida Keys) sits south of the main landmass
  • The state also contains swamplands, rural highways, and suburban neighbourhoods beyond Vice City
  • Trailer 2 showed a waterfront safehouse in the Keys with a dock and basketball court
  • Rockstar's pre-order materials confirmed locations: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Mount Kalaga National Park, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia (biker gang territory), and Grassrivers (swamplands)

From the CYBERLEEK leaked map (August 18 — reportedly a 2023 build):

  • Five counties: Lummox County, Kelly County, Leonard County, Vice-Dale County, and Mariana County
  • Vice City occupies the south-east of the map
  • A large airport is visible near Vice City
  • Named island locations including Catalan Bay, Catalan Key, Dalton Island, Gloriana Key, and Tequesta Retreat

The City as Rockstar Intended It to Be Seen

The most immediate revelation of the Extended Look is not a specific location — it's density. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, described it himself: "The density of GTA 6 has been an exciting challenge, but that's also part of the reason why our team has doubled in size."

Where GTA 5's Los Santos felt deliberately spacious — designed for high-speed chases and explosive set pieces — Vice City in GTA 6 is compressed and layered. Streets are narrower. Traffic is heavier. The pavement has people on it doing specific things rather than wandering aimlessly. NPCs have conversations with each other, shop at storefronts, react to the environment, and respond to your proximity in ways that create the impression of a city that functions without the player.

IGN's reviewer, who watched the Extended Look ahead of its Netflix debut and then observed Rob Nelson play a further 30 minutes of live gameplay, described the visual impact simply: "It's the best I've ever seen a game look on PS5, and it could hold its own against most high-end PC games too."

Vice City Districts — What the Extended Look Showed

The Extended Look opens in a downtown area of Leonida — the urban core of Vice City. The area is characterised by dense pedestrian traffic, storefronts catering to multiple demographics, and a scale that immediately reads as a real city rather than a video game approximation of one.

Storefronts include:

  • Bodegas and convenience stores — enterable, robbable
  • Pawn shops — part of the fencing economy for stolen goods
  • Hair salons — each with exclusive signature hairstyles not available elsewhere
  • Clothing stores — each with exclusive items, encouraging exploration of different neighbourhoods

The game's map on the pause screen uses satellite imagery rather than the simplified block-grid of previous GTAs, giving the city a real sense of urban geography. Individual buildings, parking structures, back-alleys, and escape routes are visible.

Southside Vice City is explicitly named in Rockstar's pre-order materials as home to the PTT Youngin$, a prominent weed-farming and dealing gang whose illegal goods store can be raided for contraband. This is the first specific named Vice City neighbourhood confirmed in official materials.

The Florida Keys / Leonida Keys

The Keys are shown in the Extended Look as the setting for early-game activity — the area where Jason operates for Brian Heder before the story escalates. Jason's Safehouse is confirmed as a beachfront Keys property with a dock. It is explicitly named in Rockstar's official materials and visible in prior trailer footage.

Rockstar's pre-order descriptions confirmed the Keys safehouse contains:

  • Space for multiple vehicles (confirmed in Ultimate Edition materials featuring a Dinka Enduro motorcycle, Crest Kayak, and Vapid Ganado pickup)
  • Working dock access
  • A basketball court visible in Trailer 2 footage

The CYBERLEEK clips from August 18 were filmed at what the community identified as this same Keys area — Jason at the safehouse and on Keys roads. The Extended Look shows the same geography at final-game quality.

Rural Leonida

Beyond Vice City and the Keys, Rockstar has confirmed multiple distinct regions:

Grassrivers — Swampland territory in the interior of Leonida. Dense foliage, waterways, and the kind of murky geography that made GTA 5's Blaine County feel expansive. The name was confirmed in Rockstar's 85-screenshot package released alongside Trailer 2.

Mount Kalaga National Park — A wilderness region confirmed in postcard-style images from Rockstar. The area suggests hiking, off-road driving, and the kind of environmental storytelling Rockstar established in RDR2.

Ambrosia — Confirmed as a rural and industrial area home to a biker gang. Described in Rockstar's location materials as distinct in character from Vice City — a harder-edged, working-class criminal landscape.

Port Gellhorn — Confirmed in Rockstar's official location images as featuring cheap motels and strip clubs — the GTA equivalent of a border-town stop. A functional location for fencing stolen goods, taking on contracts, and staying off the grid.

The Extended Look confirms that exploration across all of these regions is rewarded — emergent events, hidden jobs, and activities are spread across the map rather than concentrated in Vice City. Nelson: "There's a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently that we're not necessarily directing you to through objectives or blips or icons on a map. If you take a bit of time and explore you will be rewarded — a lot."

How Big Does It Look?

Nelson confirmed the map is "big, a very big map" — the clearest official statement on GTA 6's scale yet. No square mileage or direct GTA 5 comparison was given, but the implication is clear: this is the largest GTA world ever built.

The design philosophy is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's than to any previous GTA — the world is meant to distract you. Driving from one objective to another, Jason or Lucia may spontaneously suggest a nearby opportunity, pulling you off-script. The whole map is built to reward time not spent following mission markers.

In practical gameplay terms, Vice City itself is large enough that escaping a 3-star wanted level in a vehicle is described as difficult due to street density. Foot chases through alleys are genuinely viable and sometimes preferable — a design that only works if the city has real depth.

The Leaked Map vs. What Was Officially Shown

The CYBERLEEK map gave the community a five-county structure for Leonida before the Extended Look. Now we can make the first official comparison.

The geographic layout is consistent with what was officially shown: Vice City in the southeast, the Keys extending south, interior regions filling the centre and north of the state. The Extended Look did not confirm county names on screen, but the broad geography described by CYBERLEEK — the relative positions of the Keys, the city, the swamps, and the rural north — holds up against everything Rockstar has shown.

Notable Locations to Watch For at Launch

Based on everything confirmed across trailers, the Extended Look, and Rockstar's official materials, these are the locations most worth marking for November 19:

1. Downtown Vice City — The densest urban environment in GTA history. Bodegas, pawn shops, salons, and a population that fights back. The best place to test the new NPC system from day one.

2. Jason's Safehouse (Keys) — The game's emotional home base for the early story. A beachfront property with a kayak, dock, and basketball court. Likely the first safehouse most players will spend real time in.

3. Southside Vice City — Home of the PTT Youngin$ gang. Prime territory for raids and contraband. The neighbourhood has a distinct character from the downtown core.

4. Port Gellhorn — The off-grid stopover. Motels, strip clubs, and fences make this a useful base for lower-heat criminal operations away from city scrutiny.

5. Ambrosia — Biker territory. Rockstar has consistently framed this as a distinct sub-world within Leonida, and biker gang dynamics typically produce some of the most memorable side-story content in open-world games.

6. Grassrivers — The swamp. Red Dead Redemption 2 proved that Rockstar's wilderness is never just decoration. Expect hidden locations, animals, and the kind of emergent encounters the open-world team specialises in.

7. Mount Kalaga National Park — The natural wonder. Hiking, off-road vehicles, and wildlife study for the completionist player.

8. The Police Impound Lot — Shown specifically in the Extended Look as a mission location: breaking in to retrieve a specific sports car on behalf of a contact. Already confirmed as a place worth knowing the layout of.
